As a South Florida native and a lover of fine beer I began brewing at home in 1993. I started very simply in my kitchen but soon was brewing 40 gallon batches in a brew day on my back porch. I studied every book on the subject, and even traveled the world over just to visit different breweries to learn from them. In 1996 after achieving high scores in many local brewing contests, I decided to enter the “World Home Brew” contest sponsored by Samuel Adams. Even though there were over 800 entries, I won first place. I was honored to be invited to brew my beer with the makers of Samuel Adams as well as winning a trip to the British Isles. A year later the brewers of Samuel Adams reproduced my recipe in 6 packs for the market place.
In 2006 I founded what became known as “Holy Mackerel Small Batch Beers” and in 2007 my first beer was born – a Belgian style golden ale and shortly thereafter followed by several other extremely bold flavorful brews.
Fast forward to 2016 where I was fortunate enough to be joined by my long time friend and craft beer lover, Corey Brysman… who has spent most of his life working for breweries and distributors alike and is highly aware of the ins and outs of getting beer brands to market. Although he clearly has issues and a host of mental problems, I was excited to be bringing him on board.
Although accused of many things only one is seriously true, our love for big bold and flavorful beers! We are NOT simply a marketing company and we do not view ourselves as ”contract brewers “, so rather than have someone simply make a beer for us… we design, and formulate our beers from scratch, on our small pilot or test system. Unlike others that pay millions to open up a huge facility to brew we choose to use another brewery to reproduce our recipes for us. These breweries we work with are always considered good friends and partners to us.
Now, as we are approaching 2017 we have created the “Holy Mackerel Project.” Our mission is to finally establish a home for Holy Mackerel and our fans. Construction is now underway on our “test kitchen” – “our small batch brewery ” where we can create and explore the limitless combinations of unique and flavorful recipes! We hope to see you in our Brewery / Taproom where you will be able to enjoy our Holy Mackerel specialty ales and limited releases produced right before your eyes! We will be looking forward to sharing a pint with you soon!
